Albert Hofmann - First on Acid

In Memoriam:

Sixty-five years ago last April, in a Swiss laboratory, chemist Albert Hofmann accidentally ingested a trace amount of LSD-25. By the end of the day he was having visions of “extraordinary plasticity and vividness…a kaleidoscopic play of colors.” Three days later Hofmann ingested another, minute amount of the drug, to see if the visions returned. Within an hour they did. Hofmann went on to take hundreds more LSD trips and remained a chief researcher for Sandoz Pharmaceuticals until 1971. He never disowned his “problem child,” lamenting only that it had not been treated with respect. He was 102 years old at the time of his death, last April 29.
